Not really, I would put a backup GPS in my car. One time we drove into the mountains and no cellphone network available. Without cellphone network, the route cannot calculated. Eventually I get back with the backup Garmin GPS. //@Anonymous: with smartphone and car-build-in gps everywhere, standalone gps devices are no future

There are offline maps and navigation apps that you can download beforehand, such as maps.me, sygic, google maps. Without cellular signal, your phone is still your gps. //@anonymous: Not really, I would put a backup GPS in my car. One time we drove into the mountains and no cellphone network available. I would study the GPS map before driving into mountains or where the cellular signal is weak or none. //@anonymous: Not really, I would put a backup GPS in my car. If you drive at countryside where there is no data coverage. Garmins business is actually not impacted very much by smart phone mainly because of their built-in GPS business with car manufacturer //@Anonymous: Anyone still uses GPS now?

yes people still use GPS units. I have a 1hr commute and I don't even have to touch the unit to get live traffic.. convenient. To be fair Google has better traffic routing. Last month I-95 was shut down. Garmin routed me into the main side roads that were congested. Google brought me through neiborhood roads with no stoppage.

Phone gps no doubt is getting better or already is but sometime on long drives a dedicated gps on a windshield works out better- set it and forget it.

Maps on Cellphones can work offline with GPS signals, which is also needed by the Garmins. //@Anonymous: Try to use your cellphone in Arizona or Monuments Valley. This device is still useful when no cellular signals and your car has no builtin GPS.

Actually, the cellular signals are for accessing the map (and live traffic conditions) only. Most of cell phones currently have the GPS receiver on device and can receive GPS/location signals from different Satellites. You can pre-download the map into your cell phone device when you are in the hotel (restaurant, store, or home) with internet access. Then, you can use the pre-downloaded map on your phone as the GPS device on the road even if there are no cellular signals on the road. //@Anonymous: This device is still useful when no cellular signals and your car has no builtin GPS.

It's called "Off line" map provided by Google map on your phone. No real time traffic information though. //@Anonymous: Actually, the cellular signals are for accessing the map (and live traffic conditions) only. I tried to use smartphone a couple of times but found it much worse compared to standalone GPS. Also I tried a half dozen applications for navigation and all of them useless. Standalone GPS is only device I can feel comfortably during driving. //@Anonymous: Are people still buying this?
