I dont get why Apple didn't make the base model to 16G which will probably cost them $10-12 but can jack up the base model by $60 and sell them like cakes. 8G is small niche market mostly for novice users. Truth is that we all know 8G would be enough 95% of the time but anyone with real technical experience wouldn't want to get anything less than 16G.

The M1 version doesn't suffer the low band issue in the 256Gb model. And you probably don't use it open a hundred tabs and two IDE windows with Docker containers in the back. Now, as you know, apple chips are not getting much better, partly because of lack of good engineers and the slow improvement over the 3/4nm node. So... getting M1 pro instead may be a better idea.

Anonymous

Previous gen M1 processors are a better value and should be more than sufficient for 70-80% of all users. If anything, Apple has bad marketing. No professional user is going to buy the MB with low specs, and no average user is going to spend $1.2K+ on it either. They should have significantly lowered the price, or not have an option with 8GB RAM/256GB storage.

Not entirely true. When you run out of ram, which is relatively easy to do with only 8gb,the computer is forced to use swap space which is basically your ssd drive. Swapping memory pages in and out of disk is slow. I'd much rather have a slightly slower cpu with more memory. //@anonymous: Ram doesn’t make the computers run faster. Your computer RAM is essentially short term memory where data is stored as the processor needs it. This isn't to be confused with long-term data that's stored on your hard drive, which stays there even when your computer is turned off.(info wouldn’t stay the your ram, the temporally memory pages are always on your SSD.) //@anonymous: Not entirely true. //@Anonymous: A heads up to anyone buying this particular version try to go for 512gb since the storage is slower on 256gb than its m1 predecessor.

I got exactly the same problem, display got a vertical bar right after 1 year. //@Anonymous: I have MacBook Pro M1. Display stopped working just after 1 year. Apple refused to do anything since already exceeded one year, also extended warranty from my credit card does not work since a evalluation from Apple will be reired but Apple said that there are some dent on the lid.

If 256G was not a single module like M1 Air, this is a great choice, but since it is not, go either m1 air or m1 pro, depending on your needs. I got both, one for my daughter and one for me, and yes, I tried M2 256G and M2 512G, but the former is slow, the latter is too expensive compared to its capability.
